Penske recently joined Support Military Spouses and dozens of other organizations to honor spouses on Military Spouse Appreciation Day May 9 at the Shoeboxes for Military Spouses event at Cross Creek Mall, Fayetteville, North Carolina. More than 1,200 military spouses received gift boxes filled with thank you letters from children and gifts.
“We’ve been excited to work with this wonderful organization every year,” said Mike Parker (pictured right), Penske’s district manager in Raleigh, who presented a shoebox gift to Missy Vimoto, wife of Command Sgt. Maj. Isaia T. Vimoto. He specifically recognized the spouses, saying “The sacrifices military spouses make each and every day support our country. Thank you for everything you do.”
Dr. Steven Rumley and his wife, Diane, founded Support Military Spouses in Apex, North Carolina, to recognize and applaud the courage of military spouses as they balance the responsibility of family life, care for wounded loved ones, and honor the memory of fallen heroes. Penske Truck Rental was the first business to support the Shoeboxes for Military Spouses program when it began in 2010.
“It’s all about the spouses today,” Dr. Steven Rumley said. “Thank you for who are and what you do. We couldn’t do what we’re doing without the help of many, many people across the state and our great nation. We appreciate the support of many businesses.”
Military spouses in attendance shared their appreciation for the special recognition.
“Support Military Spouses makes you feel special as a spouse,” said Janine Brown, wife of E5 Serg. Jason Brown, of Fort Bragg, Fayetteville, North Carolina. “Sometimes we’re put on the back burner.”
“It makes you feel really honored that people take time to do caring things for us,” added Michelle Chica, wife of E5 Serg. Carlos Chica, of Fort Bragg, North Carolina. “We’re just like any other wife, but we do work a little harder every day.”
“It’s a sacrifice to be a military wife, especially when your husband is gone for months or years,” said Rose Soto, wife of Javier Arvelo, E4 Serg., of Fort Bragg, “but it’s an honor just the same.”
Parker highlighted Penske’s recent support of veterans and military spouses:
• In 2013, 14 percent of new hires were veterans.
• In 2013, Penske participated in 20 military career fairs (onsite and virtual) and plan to participate in 20 fairs this year.
• Penske Truck Rental is participating in a fundraiser to benefit the Paralyzed Veterans of America’s Mission: ABLE campaign – to ensure that veterans with disabilities get the care, benefits and job opportunities they’ve earned and deserve. Penske has invited consumer rental customers to donate $1 when they rent one-way truck. The proceeds between Memorial Day 2013 and Memorial Day 2014 totaled more than $400,000.
• Penske has joined other leading employers in the 50,000 Jobs Challenge, a veterans and military spouses hiring campaign organized by Veteran Recruiting Services.

Penske Truck Rental marked the start of the Memorial Day weekend by recommitting itself to supporting Paralyzed Veterans of America.
Penske's #OneWay4PVA fundraising effort that benefits Paralyzed Veterans of America’s Mission: ABLE campaign has been extended for a second year. Since its start a year ago, the fundraising effort has generated $403,104 for the organization.
Penske Truck Rental is a business unit of Penske Truck Leasing.
"We’re pleased to continue supporting Paralyzed Veterans of America and the admirable work they do to help our veterans,” said Brian Hard, President and CEO of Penske Truck Leasing. “We are sincerely appreciative of the sacrifices these heroes have made and we are thankful our customers continue to support this initiative with us."
Penske Truck Rental will continue to invite its consumer rental customers to donate $1.00 to support Mission: ABLE when they rent a one-way truck. To multiply the impact of its customers’ contributions to helping our veterans, Penske Truck Rental will also match each $1.00 donation its one-way truck rental customers make during the campaign.
The Mission: ABLE campaign was designed to enlist Americans – citizens, communities and corporations – to help ensure our paralyzed heroes are provided the physical care needed to live a healthy life; receive the benefits they’ve earned through military service; and obtain job training and opportunities for new and fulfilling careers.
"The partnership with Penske Truck Rental is invaluable to our fundraising efforts," said Bill Lawson, National President of Paralyzed Veterans of America. "They not only support Paralyzed Veterans of America through the #OneWay4PVA Mission: ABLE campaign, but supporting the mission has become a part of their everyday business operations - engaging both their loyal customers and their employees. And, we're grateful to have them as a partner and champion for veterans."
Penske Truck Rental also announced it is now a major sponsor of the 34th National Veterans Wheelchair Games being held August 12-17 in Philadelphia.

“An increasing number of customers have expressed a desire to evaluate natural gas vehicles to see if they make sense as part of their overall fleet strategy,” stated Don Mikes, senior vice president – rental.
“These rental tractors allow our customers to field test the units and experience how they will use them within their daily business,” he said. “If a customer wants a more-permanent solution we can easily transition them into a full-service lease.”
In the near future, there will be availability in Milwaukee and Houston as well as other markets. To rent a commercial truck from Penske call 1-800-PENSKE-1.

Penske Truck Leasing offers fleet operators considering natural gas trucks: vehicle specification expertise, lease financing, grant application assistance, a nationwide network of maintenance facilities, and more than two decades of experience maintaining fleets of commercial natural gas vehicles.

Penske currently has several facilities nationally (Baltimore; Davenport, Iowa; Phoenix; Pottsville, Pennsylvania, Neenah, Wisconsin; Salt Lake City; and Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania) that are ready to service or currently service natural gas vehicles and more than a dozen others being retrofitted as part of upcoming new construction for NGV maintenance in select markets. Military family moves are unlike traditional relocations, with active duty service members being shuttled between myriad U.S. bases. As a military-friendly company Penske Truck Rental has created a specialized military call center to ease the stress of a do-it-yourself move, which the Armed Services also refers to as a PCS (Permanent Change of Station) and PPM (Personally Procured Moves).
U.S. Army veteran Joe Dezotell (pictured right) comprehends how a dedicated call center can aid transplanted military families. He was stationed at Fort Campbell (Kentucky), Fort Stewart (Georgia) Fort Gordon (Georgia) and Hanscom Air Force Base (Massachusetts).
While stationed abroad, Dezotell logged time in Panama, Germany and South Korea, where he met his wife (they have one child). He also recruited for the Army, served in the military police and at one time had 100 soldiers under his command. Dezotell served on numerous deployments during his career including combat operations and peacekeeping missions.
Today he is a retired Sgt. 1st Class of 24 years (20 years active duty and four years active reserve) and a member of the team of customer service representatives receiving toll-free calls from 1-844-4TROOPS.
“We are able to help these families find the best way to spend their military move budget,” Dezotell explained. “We help them utilize the proper discounts.”
Each Penske associate manning this center possesses a military connection: they either have a family member who has or is currently in active or reserve duty, or are veterans themselves.
“Our military call center employees have been specially trained to aid military members and their families navigate the unique requirements for each branch,” said Penske’s Don Mikes, senior vice president of rental. “We want to ensure that each family’s transition to a new base is conducted as smoothly as possible.”

Penske promises to match any competitive offer on one on one-way truck rentals for active military personnel or veterans (see the website for specific parameters).

The motion picture also features Scarlett Johansson, Sebastian Stan, Anthony Mackie, Cobie Smulders, Frank Grillo, Emily VanCamp, Hayley Atwell with Robert Redford as Alexander Pierce and Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Fury.
The yellow Penske box truck is seen early in the film during an exciting chase scene through the streets of Washington, D.C., as Jackson’s character is evading a highly trained group of mercenaries. Their soldiers have commandeered local police cars and the Penske truck helps Fury make a getaway.
The below clip includes footage of the Penske truck which is visible at the 0:47 mark.

The company’s branding also appeared in 2012’s “The Amazing Spider-Man.”

The Department of Transportation’s (DOT) Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) has new authority to shut down motor carriers who display a pattern of egregious disregard for compliance with federal safety rules under a rule recently released.
In addition, FMCSA can now suspend or revoke the operating authority of carriers who allow persons who have a history of “egregious” noncompliance “to exercise controlling influence over their operations.”
Under the new rule, FMCSA will determine whether a carrier has failed to comply with safety regulations or has tried to conceal such noncompliance. If a carrier meets FMCSA’s initial threshold, it will further evaluate the carrier to see if it has made a pattern out of not complying with safety rules or is a reincarnated carrier. It can then revoke or suspend the carrier’s authority.
FMCSA acknowledges that loss of operating authority registration is a significant penalty. “This rule is necessary and appropriate, however, to address motor carriers that engage in a pattern or practice of willfully violating safety regulations or forming new entities or affiliate relationships to avoid compliance or mask or otherwise conceal noncompliance,” the agency said.
The rule also strengthens the agency’s ability to target “chameleon” carriers or “reincarnated” carriers. FMCSA said it has determined that each year a small number of motor carriers have attempted to avoid regulatory compliance or mask or otherwise conceal noncompliance by submitting new applications for registration, often under a different name, to continue operations after being placed out of service or to avoid other negative consequences.
Congress directed FMCSA to expand its authority in both of the most recent highway funding bills — SAFETEA-LU, passed in 2009, and the current MAP-21 law, passed in 2012. FMCSA said it will define a “pattern of noncompliance” on a case-by-case basis and must have the “flexibility to tailor its enforcement actions” accordingly.
The rule should only affect a small amount of carriers each year, FMCSA said. Click here to view the entire rule.

Completing a move can be a stressful experience. Fears about cost or mechanical issues can run rampant. Luckily, there are a plethora of tools available to help ease your mind and take much of the stress out of your move. In the past few years, social media has emerged as an invaluable source of knowledge and reassurance for the anxious mover.
With its rise in popularity, social media can also become difficult to navigate. Here are some tips designed to help use it to your advantage.
Research your new home. Researching your new home is always a good idea, and social media makes that process even easier. You can search names of local businesses and schools, and more importantly, see the thoughts and opinions of your new neighbors. Web services like Trulia are a good place to start, but once you start combing through what people are actually saying about your new place of residence, you will start to develop a much clearer picture.
People who have already moved. One of the great things about using social media is the ease of use. With current technology, anyone can participate at any time. Use this to your advantage. Search blogs and forums online by using a keyword search. Odds are, someone has made a similar move to yours and has posted their thoughts. Was it expensive? How long did it take? Feel free to reach out and ask these questions – the answers are out there.
Check out social networks. Services like Facebook and Twitter have millions of users, many of which have experience moving. Do a simple keyword search to see what people are saying. What problems are they having? What are they enjoying? Social networks are great places to answer these questions. These social networks have dedicated groups that address your specific concerns.
When you have a problem. In the rare event that a problem arises on your move, social media is often the quickest way to get assistance. For example, Penske can be reached directly on Facebook or Twitter. If you have a smartphone, you can reach out at a moment’s notice and get a response just as quickly. Now you can get quick answers straight from the source.
Moving can be an experience filled with doubt and concern. Social media is a huge resource, and it’s growing larger every day. Using the strategies outlined here can make your move an adventure rather than a burden.

During a move, your four-legged friends are just as precious as your belongings. That’s whyPenske has teamed with Kurgo to keep dogs safely secured with a harness while traveling in a Penske rental truck.
Penske Truck Rental customers can receive 30 percent off all Kurgo dog travel products. Just make your purchase at Kurgostore.com and use coupon code PENSKE30.
Kurgo sells a variety of dog harnesses, as well as other innovative dog products, including car seat protectors, booster seats, leashes, collars, carriers and beds.
"Kurgo is pleased to work with Penske to help educate customers on the move about pet travel safety, as well as tips on moving with a pet," said Gordie Spater, President and Co-Founder of Kurgo Products. "We seek to work with world-class organizations, and Penske is certainly one of them."
According to the American Veterinary Medical Foundation, 36.5 percent of U.S. households own dogs, with the total U.S. dog population reaching almost 70 million. In 2012, the American Pet Products Association estimated that 11 million Americans relocate every year with their pets, primarily dogs and cats.
Kurgo offers these tips to make a move less stressful for both pets and their owners:
Preparation for Moving
Pick the Right Surroundings
• Walk around the neighborhood to determine whether the area seems safe for your pets. See if there are nearby dog parks, hiking trails or activity areas.
Identification and Microchips
• Make sure your dog has a current tag with your contact information. With all the chaos and extra nerves, many pets can be frightened and run off.
• Consider microchip technology – a chip placed under your dog’s skin that contains all his contact information. This popular device can retrieve your information in minutes.
• Look into new collar technologies that provide GPS tracking for your pet right on your PC.
Pet Comfort with Travel
• Create a comfortable environment for your pet while traveling to your new home to reduce stress. First, decide how you will transport your pet. Dogs should be restrained or contained during car travel to prevent them from getting into the front seat and causing distracted driving accidents. Smaller dogs do well in pet crates or pet carriers, while medium and large dogs seem to prefer a dog harness with seat belt.
• Familiarize your pup with the travel mode before your move. For example, if you plan to use a dog car harness and seat belt, you should place the harness on your pup every day for walking or playing around the house, so he gets comfortable with it. Before the big move, take your dog on short car rides while being restrained.
Medication and New Vets
• Keep any pet medications on hand and familiarize yourself with the emergency pet hospitals along your route.
• Before you leave the area, be sure to get a copy of all medical records for your pet, including vaccination records. Find a new veterinarian through your current veterinarian or a website like Vetstreet.com.
On Moving Day
• Be sure that your pet remains in a safe area that limits their exposure to heavy traffic in and out of the home and the flurry of heavy objects.
• Once everything is loaded, make sure your pet is properly restrained or contained in your truck or car. Be sure to bring an adequate amount of food, water and medication for the trip. Be sure to regularly hydrate your dog with water. Take frequent breaks on the drive to reduce your pet’s stress.
Introduction to a New Environment: A Brave New World
• Carefully establish a “pet HQ” for your pet in your new home where it can be carefully contained in a comfortable environment and be monitored easily. Place toys, bedding and other favorite items in the area.
• After everything has been moved in and organized, introduce them to their new environment one room at a time, ending with the area planned out and set up for their bedding. This progression allows them to feel comfortable with their new environment while clearly establishing their new sleeping area.
