Marvel’s “Captain America: The Winter Soldier” opened in theaters on April 4 and is the latest superhero film from Marvel Studios to feature a yellow Penske rental truck. The film is the sequel to Marvel’s “Captain America: The First Avenger” and stars Chris Evans as Captain America, aka Steve Rogers.
The motion picture also features Scarlett Johansson, Sebastian Stan, Anthony Mackie, Cobie Smulders, Frank Grillo, Emily VanCamp, Hayley Atwell with Robert Redford as Alexander Pierce and Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Fury.
The yellow Penske box truck is seen early in the film during an exciting chase scene through the streets of Washington, D.C., as Jackson’s character is evading a highly trained group of mercenaries. Their soldiers have commandeered local police cars and the Penske truck helps Fury make a getaway.
The below clip includes footage of the Penske truck which is visible at the 0:47 mark.
Penske works with a California transportation vehicle entertainment firm, Studio Services, which secured placement in this film.
Penske Logistics driver Rodney Simpson was returning from his last run on a recent Saturday morning – less than a half hour away from putting a period on what had been an uneventful day – when he noticed a car in front of him swerve from lane to lane and tumble down an embankment.
“I knew there was water down there. I said ‘please don’t go into the water’ because I can’t swim. The next thing I knew, they went into the water,” said Simpson, who has been with the company for just two months and was returning to his Grand Prairie, Texas, location.
After calling both the district and 911, Simpson decided to help if he could. “I said ‘I have to pull over’ because I didn’t know if kids were in the car,” recalled Simpson, a father to a 10-year-old son.
Simpson scrambled down the dark hill to find the driver and passenger trapped upside down in their small SUV. A large tree branch was obstructing the vehicle so Simpson had to pull that back to get closer and try to help free them.
He went to the passenger door first. When it wouldn’t open, he broke the window with his fist to free the passenger. He then made his way to the driver’s side, wading through waist-deep water, to get the door open and remove the injured driver.
After making sure the passenger and driver were out of the vehicle safely, Simpson went back up the embankment to the roadway to flag down first-responders. In the end Simpson himself would need stitches in his hand.
While some have labeled him a hero, Simpson said he did what anyone would have done when witnessing someone in need.
“I just saw someone who needed help, so I helped them,” Simpson said. “No matter what the situation, I always try my best.”
Darian Goddard, operations manager for Penske Logistics in Grand Prairie, said he was proud of Simpson and his willingness to help.
“It says a lot about his personal character that he is someone who is willing to step up and get involved,” Goddard said. “We are proud of his actions and it is those split-second decisions of selfless acts that make heroes.”
Marc Althen, president of Penske Logistics, applauded Simpson’s efforts.
“Safety is in the forefront for all of our associates and especially in our driver’s minds,” Althen said. “Rodney’s efforts to assist the occupants of the overturned vehicle are in line with that mindset. We commend his initiative and his split-second decision-making to render assistance.”

Penske Truck Leasing earned placement on the 2014InformationWeek Elite 100 as a top business tech innovator at No. 93. This is IW’s 26th year identifying and honoring the nation's most innovative users of information technology. Penske has earned a place in their rankings every year for the last 15 years.
“This past year the Penske Logistics technology department created a process to electronically communicate customer truck delivery information for carriers not on a standard Electronic Data Interchange (EDI) system,” stated Bill Stobbart, senior vice president of information technology for Penske Truck Leasing. “This innovative solution to a real business problem obviously caught the judges’ attention.”
In the supply chain industry, freight visibility is an important capability to both Fortune 500 and mid-size customers. When a carrier has EDI capabilities, it is able to report delivery status directly into Penske’s systems.
A number of smaller carriers that Penske employs do not have the capability to provide EDI connections. Penske’s IT professionals were tasked with building a standard process to provide these carriers with a better way to report on the pick-up and delivery status of their loads.
The solution was to install mobile device to machine communication; the driver can then send updates directly to Penske’s systems from their mobile phones via SMS text messaging.
Trucking carrier dispatchers have embraced the solution’s simplicity. Penske’s freight shipper customers and operational staff also benefit especially when deliveries are made during off-hours.
“We are honored to be recognized by InformationWeek for our support of the company’s transportation management and freight brokerage product lines,” stated Tom McKenna, Penske Logistics senior vice president of engineering and technology. “We’re confident this service offering provides our company with a competitive advantage.”
A dedication ceremony took place earlier today at Universal Technical Institute (UTI) Philadelphia in Exton, Pa., to commemorate a 1,900-square-foot multipurpose room that was funded by Penske Truck Leasing. The “Penske Room” will serve as a venue for student and staff activities: presentations, training seminars and student-peer tutoring sessions. It will become an active classroom and lab.
“One of our largest employment needs is skilled truck maintenance technicians and maintenance managers,” stated Bill Jacobelli, Penske’s senior vice president of maintenance. “We value our relationship with UTI to hire graduates to maintain our 6,600-person North American truck maintenance workforce and field maintenance management.”
Since 2010, Penske has hired over 50 graduates from UTI’s Philadelphia campus alone to work at locations across the country.
Penske Truck Leasing has introduced a diesel excellence scholarship program, where a dozen scholarships are handed out each year to UTI students nationally. A Roger Penske Outstanding Student award program was also established among UTI’s 11 campuses.
“On behalf of the entire Exton campus and everyone at UTI, we are incredibly appreciative of Penske’s significant investment in our students’ education and the positive impact the company has made – and will continue to make -- on students as they pursue careers in the automotive and diesel industry,” said Bob Kessler, UTI Philadelphia campus president.

The awards also recognize providers of supply chain solutions and services assisting their customers in achieving measurable sustainability goals.”
Earlier this year, Penske Logistics was given the 2013 SmartWay Excellence Award by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. The company was highlighted as an industry leader in freight supply chain performance energy and efficiency.
A few reasons Penske earned the Supply and Demand Chain Executive honor:
Reducing its annual carbon dioxide emissions by 32 percent
Lessening nitrous oxide emissions by 53 percent
Cutting particulate matter emissions by over 67 percent
87 percent of the carriers that Penske Logistics utilizes to transport freight for its customers are SmartWay partners
According to Drew Cullen, Penske vice president of fuels and environmental affairs, the company achieved these reductions via proper specification of late-model vehicles, including idle control and aerodynamic technologies, and rigorous management controls, including monitoring of fuel economy at the driver and route level.
Most importantly, Cullen, noted, improvements came from the commitment from the entire Penske Logistics team to improve performance.
“We are honored to be recognized by Supply and Demand Chain Executive magazine for our company’s sustainability improvements,” stated Marc Althen, Penske Logistics president.
As a 2013 winner of SmartWay’s Affiliate Challenge Award, Penske participated in a national challenge developed by EPA to acknowledge SmartWay Affiliates that have initiated and executed exceptional recruiting, promotional and marketing activities in support of the EPA’s goals to reduce truck emissions and improve freight efficiency.
These activities were part of Penske’s Supply and Demand Chain submission application. This was in achieved in part by:
The hosting of educational events for customers via webinars and one-on-one education, strategy and recruiting sessions
Attending and presenting at sustainability conferences and college symposiums
Ongoing recruiting of customers to join SmartWay
Assisting customers with the completion of the program’s Truck Carrier FLEET models and helping them to establish miles per gallon (MPG) and emissions benchmarking that correlate with SmartWay Carrier Performance Rankings
The Penske organization has a strong commitment to SmartWay. Penske Truck Leasing and Penske Truck Rental are SmartWay affiliate partners. Penske Logistics is a trucking carrier partner and a logistics partner.
