CSCMP’s 22nd Annual State of Logistics Report® Presented by Penske Logistics

This widely followed industry report and well-attended session drew a standing-room only crowd last year. So, be sure to arrive at this session early. During this session at the CSCMP Global Conference, you’ll find out how key trends across modes including trucking, rail, ocean and air will impact the rest of 2011 and well into 2012. Since the report’s release in June at the National Press Club in Washington, D.C., many of the key insights gained from the report and panelists have already come to fruition. The major transportation figures and facts will be updated with more-recent data for the upcoming Philadelphia conference presentation.
Following the initial release in a guest blog post on “Move Ahead,” panel moderator Adrian Gonzalez wrote:
“To succeed in this so-called “new normal” environment, companies need access to business intelligence information and tools to make smarter decisions faster. They need the ability to modify and enable new business processes, quickly and cost-effectively, in response to changing market dynamics and customer requirements. They must have flexible logistics networks to exploit new market opportunities and create a competitive advantage. They must take an end-to-end perspective of business processes—across functional groups and trading partners—instead of a fragmented view,” he wrote.
The report’s author, Rosalyn Wilson, in an August interview with “Move Ahead” said there are telling signs that may indicate a double-dip recession may be in the cards.
“There is very lean ordering and lean inventory, and a tremendous amount of discounting,” Wilson pointed out, noting that “if retailers continue to cut their margins back to nothing – how long can you exist with almost nothing for your margin?”
No doubt the State of Logistics Report session will certainly be riveting and spur a great amount of debate, insights and audience interest.
Annual Third-Party Logistics CEO Survey
October 4: 1 p.m. – 2:30 p.m. in Room 109B
This session is based on a survey of the leaders of the 40 largest 3PLs operating in North America, Europe, and Asia. The survey and its results are researched and analyzed by Dr. Robert Lieb, professor of supply chain management at Northeastern University, and co-presented by Penske’s Gallick.
In an advance interview with “Move Ahead” Dr. Lieb shared a few keen preliminary insights that include:
Supply Chain Impact on Japan’s Earthquake and Tsunami
“The impact of the Japanese earthquake and tsunami was not limited to the APAC region. It had substantial effects on supply chain activities throughout the world. That experience has led many shippers to reconsider sourcing and manufacturing practices, as well as prior commitments to the concepts of lean and JIT manufacturing,” noted Dr. Lieb
Social Media Rise in the Supply Chain
“Our research has shown that many 3PL have initiated social networking activities during the past two years. While the impact of those activities has been limited to date, 3PLs are generally quite optimistic about the value of such activities moving forward,” he said.
Financial Outlook for 3PLs Improving
“With few exceptions, the major third-party logistics companies we surveyed are quite bullish about the financial prospects of their companies over the next one and three year periods.”

Expect many more supply chain and logistics insights and trends in this session, which is one of the longest-running conducted studies of its kind that is regularly presented annually at CSCMP. Penske Logistics has been sponsoring this widely cited survey research for several years.

Penske Truck Leasing once again is championing safety in the transportation industry through its support of the 25th Annual International Foodservice Distributors Association (IFDA) Food Industry Truck Driving Championships. Penske is the leading sponsor and primary vehicle provider.
The event will take place at the Disney Coronado Springs Resort from Sept. 23-25 in Lake Buena Vista, Fla.
Drivers representing food service distributors, food service manufacturers with private fleets, retail/wholesale distributors, self-distributing retail supermarket companies and other types of food companies across North America gather to compete each year in this important industry safety event.
Stated Britt Wood, IFDA vice president of industry programs and services: "The IFDA Truck Driving Championship is the only national event held for an industry in North America, and we are very proud to have Penske supporting this event. Penske's participation is a clear reflection of the company's support for a strong safety culture for drivers across the food industry."
The IFDA is a trade organization of food service distributors serving operations throughout the U.S., Canada, and other countries.

Penske Logistics has inked a contract with LG Electronics Brazil to offer expanded warehouse and dedicated distribution services.
Penske Logistics South America will aid LG in the Brazilian distribution of consumer products like televisions, DVD players, washing machines and refrigerators. The largest South American country is also among the world’s fastest growing economies, known informally as a BRIC country (Brazil, Russia, India and China).
“We selected Penske Logistics because of the technical superiority and extended experience in electronics, and facilities that meet LG’s highest standards, and because their distribution centers are located in strategic areas,” said Carlos Neto, logistics manager for LG Electronics Brazil.
Penske will store and distribute LG products from these distribution centers: a 400,000 square foot location in Cajamar, São Paulo; a Jaboato dos Gurarapes, Pernambuco, building with 140,000-square-feet; and a 330,000 square foot building in Salto, São Paulo.
In total, Penske will aid LG Brazil in managing two LG owned facilities, and four distribution centers, spanning nearly every corner of a country with 203 million residents, according to the CIA World Factbook.
“Our strategic analysis of LG’s product portfolio and consumer market showed the best areas for these distribution centers, which are more geographically dispersed and better positioned to supply LG products,” noted Penske Logistics South America managing director Paulo Sarti.

Penske Truck Rental has joined in its support of the 25th Anniversary of Rick Hansen Man In Motion Relay Tour.
Beginning August 24 in Cape Spear, Newfoundland, the 25thAnniversary Relay will retrace the Canadian segment of Hansen’s original tour, but this time one man in motion will be represented and celebrated by many in motion, by engaging 7,000 participants from across Canada who have made their own difference in the lives of others.
Penske Truck Rental is participating in this event by providing much-needed transportation support that will accompany and assist the cross-Canada tour.
“We’re pleased to be involved in this event that supports not only diversity and inclusion but giving back to our communities,” said Jason Schappert, a Penske district manager in Burnaby, British Columbia. “Rick Hansen is a national hero and an inspiration to Canadians and people overcoming challenges everywhere.”
This anniversary event fully recreates the original Man In Motion cross-Canada tour that spanned 12,000 kilometers from coast to coast. The relay will travel through over 600 communities, visit every capital city and touch all provinces and territories and reach over 70 percent of the Canadian population.
The relay tour will also engage approximately 7,000 medal-bearers, who are difference-makers in their own right. These individuals will cover an average of 40 to 80 kilometers a day, making their way across the country passing a singular Rick Hansen Medal to the next participant.
Penske associates like British Columbia-based lease sales representative Teresa Thompson also plan to participate in supporting the event as it spans across different stages of the country.
“Rick Hansen’s story is truly inspiring and I’m excited to be able to take part in this event as a participant,” said Thompson.
Rick Hansen sustained a spinal cord injury (SCI) in a car crash at age 15. Paralyzed from the waist down, he slowly came to terms with how to deal with his new life, setting new goals from new dreams.
After months of rehabilitation, Hansen returned to his first passion: sports. Fueled by his mantra “anything is possible,” he went on to win 19 international wheelchair marathons, including six medals as a Paralympian.
Inspired by the dream of a world accessible and inclusive for all, and a passion to make a difference in the lives of others, Hansen set out on a journey, his legendary Man In Motion World Tour, on March 21, 1985.
He wheeled more than 40,000 km through 34 countries, raising $26 million for SCI research and quality of life programs. More importantly was the collective shift in consciousness in the belief of the potential of people with disabilities when barriers are removed.
