AAA Predicts Record Number of Memorial Day Weekend Drivers
More than 39 million drivers are expected to pack up and head to holiday destinations for the Memorial Day holiday, in spite of increased fuel costs.
Joining holiday travelers will be thousands of do-it-yourself movers heading to new hometowns and professional truck drivers working hard to keep the supply chain moving.
AAA projects 45 million travelers will head 50 or more miles from home over the holiday weekend which begins Thursday, May 21, and ends Memorial Day, Monday, May 25.
“Memorial Day marks the unofficial start of summer, and for most Americans, it’s a three-day weekend,” said Stacey Barber, Vice President of AAA Travel. “Travel demand remains strong, and despite higher fuel prices, many people are prioritizing leisure travel during holiday breaks.”
Holiday Travel Outlook
AAA projects 39.1 million people will travel by car over Memorial Day weekend. Driving is the preferred mode of transportation this year, with 87% of Memorial Day travelers choosing to take road trips, according to AAA.
INRIX, a provider of transportation data and insights, said drivers should expect the heaviest congestion on Thursday and Friday between 3 p.m. and 6 p.m. and Monday afternoon. Sunday should be the lightest day for traffic.
AAA reminds drivers to put safety first: Slow Down, Move Over, and drive sober. Before hitting the road, drivers are encouraged to check their car’s battery, tire pressure, and fluids.
Summer Moving Season
Memorial Day also signals the start to the busy summer moving season, as do-it-yourself movers pack up for moves across town and across the country.
- Pack up early so loading can begin as soon as you pick up your truck.
- Give yourself enough travel time to account for potential delays, including road construction.
- Make sure you have snacks and drinks ready for the road.
- For cross-country movers, plan breaks and do a little sightseeing along the way.
- After you arrive at your destination, make sure you allow enough time to unload.
