With just days until holiday celebrations are in full swing, the race is on to complete Christmas gift giving and make the perfect additions to festive tablescapes.
<p>Yet, the staples and touchstones of the holiday season would not be possible without the dedication of millions of professional truck drivers.</p><p><a href="https://www.penskelogistics.com/" rel="noopener">Penske Logistics</a> paused in the season of giving to thank the company’s 4,500 professional truck drivers in the U.S. and Canada for all they do - during the holiday season and throughout the year - to move our world forward.</p><p>“We want to thank them for their hard work and their professionalism,” said Tom Scollard, vice president of dedicated contract carriage. “We have a lot of respect for the job that they do.”</p><p>Each year, truck drivers play a key role in moving the economy forward. Penske Logistics was recently named “2017 Carrier of the Year” by MI Windows and Doors, LLC, one of the nation's largest suppliers of vinyl and aluminum windows and doors.

Penske Associates Assist Young Cancer Survivor’s Toy Drive

A cancer diagnosis a few weeks before Christmas last year threatened to dim the magic and wonder of the holiday season for 8-year-old Makenna Gochenour.
<p>Battling the tumor meant undergoing two surgeries at <a href="https://www.rchsd.org/" rel="noopener">Rady Children’s Hospital</a> in San Diego, California, requiring Makenna to spend most of her holiday recovering at the hospital. Yet, somehow, Santa Claus found her, bringing Christmas gifts to Makenna and other children battling life-threatening illnesses.</p><p>Now cancer-free, this year it was Makenna’s turn. She became Santa’s little helper, spearheading a toy drive at <a href="https://www.cajonvalley.net/fuerte" rel="noopener">Fuerte Elementary School</a> and <a href="https://www.pensketruckrental.com/locations/california/san_diego/652110/?utm_source=google&utm_medium=organic&utm_campaign=google-my-business-HPTL-6521-10" rel="noopener">Penske Truck Rental</a> that would bring 133 toys and joy to the children at Rady. Rady Children’s Hospital Foundation distributed the toys to the children.</p><p>“They have to spend their Christmas in the hospital and they can’t go spend time with their families around a Christmas tree in their own house or see friends around Christmas time. I wanted to make them happy for Christmas,” said Makenna, now 9, who attends the third grade at Fuerte.</p><p><strong>The Power of a Toy</strong></p><p>Rady Children’s Hospital-San Diego is a 551-bed pediatric care facility providing the largest source of comprehensive pediatric medical services in the San Diego area. It is the only hospital in the San Diego area dedicated exclusively to pediatric healthcare and the region’s only designated pediatric trauma center.</p><p>“There is a great need for diversion from the abnormal, demanding, and oftentimes scary situations our patients and their families face every day, and at Rady Children’s we really strive to prioritize holistic healing by facilitating such diversion,” said Christine Hamlin, administrative associate at Rady Children’s Hospital Foundation, who also works in the Toy Room.</p><p>“It is even more meaningful when sweet acts of generosity come from someone being impacted by what we do here – whether it be a compassionate response from community members, an expression of gratitude from parents, or the share in optimism that Makenna set out to bring to her fellow fighters here at Rady Children’s,” Hamlin said. “The power one toy has to bring much-needed levity and comfort into a family’s challenging experience becomes so evident.”</p><p><strong>Driving Holiday Cheer</strong></p><p>A few weeks ago, Makenna wrote a letter to her principal about conducting the toy drive at Fuerte. All the shops, rental and management, they were the ones who made things happen,” Gochenour said. “We were just able to be the lucky ones who got to give the stuff away. I think it is a great thing.”</p><p>The generosity of Penske, and his fellow associates comes as no surprise to Gochenour.</p><p>“When we had to go through her treatment, just the amount of understanding that we received – everyone was very thoughtful. They allowed me to take the time I needed to be at all of her treatment appointments,” Gochenour said. “It felt like a family moment even at work when we were going through all this.”</p><p>The Rady Children’s Hospital Foundation praised the effort of Penske associates to bring joy to the children during the holidays.</p><p>“Penske employees’ generosity brings joy and comfort to children who are in the hospital during the holidays,” said Steve Jennings, executive director of Rady Children’s Hospital Foundation. “I wish each of you could be in the room when we deliver the toys – for a moment, the delight in their faces overshadows any other pain they may be experiencing – and they are able to feel like a regular kid. Thank you for your part in creating that magic.”</p><p>And, it was just that feeling that motivated Makenna to want to give back.</p><p>“A lot of it was about how she felt when she was at the hospital,” Gochenour said. “That made that kind of impression about how important things like that mean.”</p><p>On the day Makenna delivered the toys to Rady, she received a gift of her own: a clean bill of health.</p><p>“If the tumor was going to come back, it would be in the first year,” said Gochenour. “We were just over the 12 months when she had her last scan, which happened to be last Friday when we were delivering the toys. Penske Food Drive Benefits Pennsylvania Veterans

The Paul R. Gordon Veteran Social Center of Berks County in Reading, Pennsylvania, gives at-risk veterans a place to find fellowship and receive much-needed assistance.
<p>Yet, it was the center's turn to be on the receiving end as Penske associates recently donated nearly 100 bags of food for veterans in need and their families.</p><p>The <a href="https://www.gopenske.com/">Penske</a> Women’s Network (PWN) coordinated the food drive for the food pantry operated by the center, which is located at the <a href="http://www.hopeforreading.org/" rel="noopener">Hope Rescue Mission</a> in Reading, Pennsylvania.</p><p><img class="rm-shortcode" data-rm-shortcode-id="16b4eacdc358ba9e87bfa9cac3ea85cf" data-rm-shortcode-name="rebelmouse-image" id="0322b" type="lazy-image" data-runner-src="https://assets.rebelmouse.io/eyJhbGciOiJIUzI1NiIsInR5cCI6IkpXVCJ9.eyJpbWFnZSI6Imh0dHBzOi8vYXNzZXRzLnJibC5tcy8xOTEyODQyNy9vcmlnaW4uanBnIiwiZXhwaXJlc19hdCI6MTYzNTQxMTg2N30.5-j-EQ-Dbe4JI1w0PjIFLZBBm9ZrTgqYBmQ9SR9SUFU/img.jpg?width=980"/></p><p>“It is imperative for us to celebrate veterans, be grateful to them and always include them as contributing members of our society,” said Carie Seymour, Penske’s director of field HR and diversity and inclusion, who leads the community service committee for PWN. “They have gone through hardships that we have never known.”</p><p><strong>Veterans Making a Difference </strong></p><p>The center is operated by Liz and Doug Graybill, both veterans in their own right.</p><p>Liz served for 23 years in the Army and Doug, her husband, served in the Marine Corps. Both have seen first-hand the struggles faced by homeless veterans.</p><p>For years, the couple helped homeless veterans with whatever they could – tents, tarps, food – before creating the non-profit Veterans Making A Difference with a mission to help low income and at-risk veterans and their families.</p><p>“It blows my mind the need out there,” said Doug Graybill. “It’s one sad story after another.”</p><p>“We have always helped with food, toiletries, personal care items, clothing, and we also help with rent, security deposit, gas cards, and utility bills. We have paid for dentures, veterans’ funerals – whatever we can do to help the veteran and the families,” said Liz Graybill.</p><p>But, it soon became clear that they need a place where veterans could find comfort in the fellowship of other veterans.</p><p>“Like Doug, my husband, said, ‘Loneliness is loneliness.’ It doesn’t matter your financial status,” Liz said. “This is a place where all veterans can come hang out. Young, old, rich, poor, successful or struggling, male or female, combat or peacetime, we all speak the same language.</p><p>“This is a place where it is safe for them to open up. We are not judging them. It gives them a place to call their own.”</p><p>On the last Saturday of each month, the center operates a veterans-certified food pantry through the Greater Berks Food Bank. The rest of the month, the center provides emergency food assistance to veterans in need.</p><p>Although the center is not a soup kitchen, the Graybills have invited the community to prepare a meal and bring it for the veterans. “It gives the veterans another reason to come out and socialize, and it gives the community a reason to thank the veterans, so we want community involvement,” Liz said.</p><p><strong>People Helping People </strong></p><p>Penske has been a staunch supporter of veterans, most notably through its support of <a href="http://www.pva.org/" rel="noopener">Paralyzed Veterans of America</a> and through Penske Truck Rental’s Mission: ABLE fundraiser <a href="https://www.pensketruckrental.com/discounts/mission-able/" rel="noopener">#OneWay4PVA</a>.</p><p>For some time, the PWN has been actively seeking to become engaged in a local community event that supports veterans. The veterans center was a natural fit.</p><p>The call went out for donations in late November at Penske’s corporate office in suburban Reading, and the response from the company’s generous associates was swift and overwhelming, Seymour said.</p><p>“Penske associates are proud to represent Penske when the company commits to helping those in need,” Seymour said.</p><p>On the day of the distribution, a group of Penske associates was also on hand with their own families – including children in tow – to serve coffee and donuts provided by the company to the veterans while they waited for their donation bags to be prepared.</p><p>In addition to pantry staples such as soups, canned vegetables, pasta sauce and rice, the bags also contained bread and non-perishables, such as meat, as well as personal care items and a warm blanket.</p><p><img class="rm-shortcode" data-rm-shortcode-id="b8237ed68feea3fbb1c89c847b04af8c" data-rm-shortcode-name="rebelmouse-image" id="6f48d" type="lazy-image" data-runner-src="https://assets.rebelmouse.io/eyJhbGciOiJIUzI1NiIsInR5cCI6IkpXVCJ9.eyJpbWFnZSI6Imh0dHBzOi8vYXNzZXRzLnJibC5tcy8xOTEyODQyOC9vcmlnaW4uanBnIiwiZXhwaXJlc19hdCI6MTYyNjY0MzQzNH0.k8zWZ5oKT_7X9E2peR5SWdKb6VS40GWlNEVZ9XtMCss/img.jpg?width=980"/></p><p>Cynthia Camilo, a mother of five who served in the Air Force as an information manager from 2003 to 2008, said she appreciates the center and the food distribution. “This really helps out,” she said.</p><p>Robert Graeff, a Navy veteran, was touched that so many children were on hand to serve coffee refills. “Seeing the kids puts a smile on your face,” he said. “They know what this is all about.”</p><p>Among the Penske associates on hand to help was Danielle Cummings, an accountant in the Operational Accounting department.</p><p>Cummings, a veteran of the Army National Guard, is one of Penske’s 1,700 Penske military veterans. Penske Truck Leasing Opens in Bedford Park, Illinois

Penske Truck Leasing recently celebrated the opening of a new Chicagoland facility with a grand opening event. Strategically located in the Bedford Park community, the state-of-the art building will be home to former Penske Cicero and Chicago Ridge locations.

FMCSA Grants 90-day ELD Waiver for Short-Term Rental Trucks

Earlier today, the Truck Renting and Leasing Association (TRALA) was notified by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) that it had granted TRALA's request for a 90-Day waiver from the Electronic Logging Device (ELD) Mandate for short-term rental trucks (defined as 30 days or less).

Tips to Help You Navigate Your Winter Move

Planning a move can be a stressful time in any season, but winter offers its own set of unique challenges for Penske Truck Rental’s household movers.
<p>Bitter, biting winds coupled with frigid temperatures and blowing snow can make navigating roadways a challenge.</p><p></p><p>With your safety in mind, Penske Truck Rental has assembled a few winter driving <a href="https://www.pensketruckrental.com/renting-from-penske/plan-your-move/winter-driving/" rel="noopener">safety tips</a> to keep you and your loved ones safe in the event of winter weather.</p><p>One of the first major hurdles is adjusting to the difference in driving a rental truck compared to another type of vehicle such as cars. Trucks take longer to stop and are not as low to the ground as personal vehicles.</p><p>“We want our customers to have the safest move possible, so it is important to keep in mind the size of the rental truck,” said Jeff Werner, director of rental contact centers for Penske Truck Rental. “The rental trucks are larger and heavier than our customers' everyday vehicle.”</p><p>Central Reservation’s Moving Advisors are trained to offer winter driving safety tips for renters whose moves takes them into areas experiencing winter weather.</p><p>When you slide into the driver’s seat, make sure to take a few minutes to let the truck warm up before starting your journey.</p><p><strong>Before you leave:</strong></p><ul class="ee-ul"> <li>Check weather sources before your move to help you plan out your trip. When traveling, listen to local radio stations for the forecast.</li></ul><ul class="ee-ul"> <li>Make sure you have a snowbrush and ice scraper in your truck during your move to remove snow and ice from all windows, lights, hood and roof.</li> <li>Stock your vehicle with basic supplies like warm clothing, blankets, flashlights, extra food, bottled water, road flares and a first-aid kid. Sunglasses help cut glare from snow.</li></ul><p>Movers traveling through mountain passes or northern states may be required to have tire chains available in the event of a snow or ice storm, so it is a good idea to have them on hand.</p><p>“We do not reimburse customers for the tire chains, but we will make them aware if they are traveling through some of the mountain passes that require them,” said Tara Reinhart, assistant manager of training in Penske’s Central Reservations department.</p><p><strong>While driving:</strong></p><ul class="ee-ul"> <li>Leave extra room between the truck and the vehicle in front of you. Trucks require even more time and room to stop in bad weather.</li> <li>Don't force too much power on the drive wheels; this can cause you to lose traction when driving in the snow and result in a side skid.</li> <li>Use extra caution when traveling across bridges and overpasses. They freeze before the road.</li></ul><p>There are also special considerations you should take when driving a diesel-powered truck in cold weather.</p><p>You should always park your truck out of the wind and remember to turn off all lights to allow batteries to maintain a full charge. Watch Out for Wildlife on the Road

<p>Wherever and whenever you are driving your <a href="https://www.pensketruckrental.com/" rel="noopener">Penske rental truck</a>, wildlife poses a serious road hazard. Whether you’re leaving early for work in the morning or returning home after staying late, you may want to drive a little slower. Animals can appear on the road when you least expect it.</p><p>“Be extra cautious at dawn and dusk,” said an AAA spokesperson. “Most animals, especially deer, tend to be more active early in the morning and at dusk.”</p><p>Slow down and use extra caution when traveling through areas with a high and active wildlife population. You can expect increased activity during the fall months. Hunting and mating season, for example, tend to be this time of year.</p><p>In the event you do see deer or smaller animals in the middle of the roads, AAA advises drivers to stay in their lane.</p><p>“Apply the brakes firmly and remain in your lane,” the AAA spokesperson said. “Swerving to avoid an animal can often cause a more serious crash or result in drivers losing control of their vehicles.”</p><p>That being said, be sure to leave plenty of braking distance between yourself and the driver in front of you. Penske Helps Bring Holiday Joy to Military Spouses

Little boys and girls all over the world can’t wait for Christmas morning to arrive, but one non-profit group has been celebrating Christmas early by delivering presents to military families in North Carolina and South Carolina.

But, one of their most successful efforts in giving back to those who make the ultimate sacrifice is achieved through their Appreciation Care Package Program.</p><p>These care packages help fulfill SMS’s main mission. They strive to support military spouses who go through the challenging time of moving from base to base and taking care of their families, while their loved ones are overseas.</p><p>“We were the first non-profit founded whose main focus was the military spouse,” said Rumley. “In addition to all our hard work, this program has evolved greatly on its own with all the donations that we get.”</p><p>Since they started the care package program in 2009, Rumley’s team has been able to give out more than 50,000 care packages.</p><p>The spouses and their children receive two different care packages.</p><p>Spouses receive jewelry, stationery and books. In the children’s boxes are stuffed animals, toys, books and other small goodies. However, in both packages is one thing that brings most military spouses to tears: a personal hand-written thank you note.</p><p>“The spouses just appreciate the fact that they are recognized for the sacrifices they have made, and they’ve sacrificed a lot,” Rumley said.</p><p>“They move around from base to base, and just the fact that we recognize those sacrifices and hardships brings many of the women to tears. That’s why we do this year after year.”</p><p>The care packages are handed out to everyone at various military bases. Young Professionals Flourish in Supply Chain Roles

Today’s young supply chain professionals find their work to be rewarding – even exciting – in a field they say offers a clear path to advancement.
<p>These insights, the result of a groundbreaking industry survey of young supply chain professionals, are not only key for employers looking to attract young professional talent to the supply chain field, but are necessary to retain them.</p><p>The <a href="https://cscmp.org/" rel="noopener">Council of Supply Chain Management Professionals (CSCMP</a>) and <a href="https://www.penskelogistics.com/" rel="noopener">Penske Logistics</a> surveyed 300 supply chain professionals under the age of 30 as part of the <a href="https://www.penskelogistics.com/insights/industry-reports/young-professionals/" rel="noopener">"2018 CSCMP/Penske Young Professionals in Supply Chain Survey"</a> to determine what young professionals wanted from their career.</p><p>“We believe that young professionals represent the next generation of supply chain leaders, as they are critical to maintaining relevancy as a professional society and a supply chain community,” said Rick Blasgen, president and chief executive officer of CSCMP.</p><p>One of the key ways to accomplish this is through identifying a robust pool of talent.</p><p>“Like many industries, talent acquisition is a top priority for us, and finding motivated young professionals who are eager to work in the supply chain is paramount,” said Andy Moses, senior vice president of global products at Penske Logistics.</p><p><strong>Findings Show Confidence in Career Path</strong></p><p><img class="rm-shortcode" data-rm-shortcode-id="e3664b6ece87ad9ed6e0c92e748da7e7" data-rm-shortcode-name="rebelmouse-image" id="b3fe4" type="lazy-image" data-runner-src="https://assets.rebelmouse.io/eyJhbGciOiJIUzI1NiIsInR5cCI6IkpXVCJ9.eyJpbWFnZSI6Imh0dHBzOi8vYXNzZXRzLnJibC5tcy8xOTEyODQxMy9vcmlnaW4ucG5nIiwiZXhwaXJlc19hdCI6MTY0MTQ4MDAxOX0.o3Ky8xeE8NFOG0-VxyK886tdqHsaSgeC_h2UmCbCmNA/img.png?width=980"/></p><p>The survey asked young professionals what they thought about their career paths, education and professional development as well as their priorities and goals for the future.</p><p>All of the young professionals who participated in the study were working in the industry for about three years and employed by a third-party logistics, manufacturing or transportation and warehousing company.</p><p>Some of the key findings of the survey included:</p><ul class="ee-ul"> <li>81 percent of respondents strongly agree that supply chain is a good career choice.</li> <li>86 percent of respondents said they are either very satisfied or somewhat satisfied with their current employer.</li> <li>76 percent would describe their work as satisfying, 67 percent said rewarding, and 60 percent said exciting.</li> <li>71 percent agree that it’s easy to advance in the field.</li> <li>The majority said they prefer in-person training, delivered through mentoring or task-based activities.</li></ul><p>“Learning that diversity of work, in-person mentoring and career advancement are important to this demographic reinforces the work we are doing to recruit and retain top young talent here at Penske,” Moses said.</p><p><strong>Fate Supplies a New Career Path</strong></p><p>After graduating college with a bachelor’s degree in biochemistry, Amy Beacom thought she would be working in a research lab and not as a supply chain analyst for Penske Logistics in Beachwood, Ohio.</p><p>Yet a chance visit to job sites encouraged Beacom to explore the supply chain field to see if her multi-tasking skills and ability to learn quickly while on the job would be a good fit.</p><p>“I wanted to use my degree for something, so I was looking for a job that offered opportunity and room for growth. I thought I was going to do research, and this kind of just fell in my lap,” said Beacom, who has been working for Penske for six years.</p><p>Alexander Amariles was not new to logistics when he decided to seek a career in supply chain. A former driver, Amariles was responsible for local moves. Now, he is a load planner in Beachwood, Ohio, shepherding shipments across the border between the U.S. and Mexico.</p><p>“I used to do the physical work, and now I do the mental work,” said Amariles, who has been working for Penske Logistics for a little more than three years. “Working in the supply chain field has exposed me to a different kind of career that I never knew existed.”</p><p>For those new to the supply chain industry, including new college graduates, Penske Logistics offers an opportunity to learn the field and grow in their career.</p><p>“For associates who are new in their career, Penske provides the ability to learn about supply chain management in a hands-on environment,” said Jennifer Biehn, director of human resources for Penske Logistics.</p><p>“We hire recent college graduates on a regular basis and offer opportunities in dedicated contract carriage, distribution center management and transportation management,” she said. “We care about our associates and invest in their career development.”</p><p>Penske Logistics has many opportunities for professional growth for associates who have demonstrated a proven record for driving results.</p><p>“Associates receive ongoing training to refine current skillsets, or to take on positions of greater responsibility when their performance demonstrates readiness,” Biehn said. “We provide associates with leadership development and functional training opportunities to help drive process improvement and meet their career goals.”</p><p>That career development – ongoing training coupled with advancement opportunities with Penske Logistics – continues to be very important to Beacom.</p><p>“Advancement is important for a lot of people,” she said. “You want to make sure that if you stay with a company, you experience growth at some point. <p><a href="https://www.usatoday.com/story/tech/2017/11/27/cyber-mondays-still-got-it-840-million-spent-10-00-am/897831001/" rel="noopener">Record-setting</a> Cyber Monday sales signal increased demand for deliveries, as well as higher consumer expectations, as more shoppers ventured online to find the perfect holiday gift.</p><p>Many retailers and parcel delivery companies will turn to <a href="https://www.pensketruckrental.com/commercial-truck-rental/" rel="noopener">Penske Truck Rental</a> to provide the much-needed additional commercial trucks to help meet the holiday demand.</p><p>“We work closely with some of the largest companies in the world to make sure they are able to get packages to their customers,” said Zac Bugay, manager of national rental accounts for Penske Truck Rental.</p><p><strong>Holiday Shopping Snapshot</strong></p><p>The <a href="https://nrf.com/media/press-releases/consumers-and-retailers-win-big-over-thanksgiving-holiday" rel="noopener">National Retail Federation</a> (NRF) credited good weather and a robust economy with drawing shoppers to brick-and-mortar stores as well as online.</p><p>“All the fundamentals were in place for consumers to take advantage of incredible deals and promotions retailers had to offer,” said NRF President and CEO Matthew Shay. “From good weather across the country to low unemployment and strong consumer confidence, the climate was right, literally and figuratively, for consumers to tackle their holiday shopping lists online and in stores.”</p><p>More than 174 million consumers shopped in stores and online between Thanksgiving Day and Cyber Monday, according to a survey by the NRF and Prosper Insights & Analytics.</p><p>The most popular day for in-store shopping was Black Friday followed by Cyber Monday, while Cyber Monday and Black Friday were the top two days for online shoppers, according to the survey.</p><p><strong>Meeting the Need</strong></p><p>Well before thoughts turn to holiday shopping, Penske Truck Rental’s Bugay said the company is preparing to accommodate the <a href="https://www.cnbc.com/2017/11/27/retailers-e-commerce-fulfillment-centers-ready-for-cyber-monday-surge.html" rel="noopener">expected need</a> for additional rental trucks.</p><p>“There is a lot of build-up going into the holiday season, and we are working with the large packaging companies to make sure we provide them with what they need,” Bugay said.</p><p>The preparation includes initiating contact with parcel delivery companies as early as August. “We start talking about peak season in the second quarter at a national level to see what they will need year over year,” Bugay said.</p><p>The need for more trucks does not just extend to delivering consumer purchases, but also includes inventory deliveries to restock retail shelves and online retailer warehouses.</p><p>“Volume increases, which means more trucks need to be on the road to deliver more, which means normal fleets for our customers won’t handle the volume, so we need to provide them with rentals,” Bugay said.</p><p>So, don’t be surprised if a Penske truck shows up to your door to deliver your holiday packages.</p><p>“I think about the young child whose parents want to get him or her the latest toy that will make their day on Christmas morning.
