Take Advantage of Safety Technology on Newer Trucks

Advances in technology, automation and safety features are improving safety measures within the trucking industry. These new tools are protecting professional drivers and the motoring public while also reducing trucking carriers' liability.

Technology such as collision mitigation systems, lane departure warning systems and automatic braking can reduce the risk of a crash. Penske Truck Leasing has made several systems standard on its equipment. Fleets can also add in-cab cameras, which have been shown to exonerate drivers and help cut insurance costs.

North America is the largest market for video technology, which is likely due to carriers' emphasis on safety as well as concerns over high insurance costs and large court payouts. That incentivizes carriers to use safety systems to make their systems and fleets safer and use data to negotiate lower insurance rates.

Penske Truck Leasing offers Class 8 tractors with the latest safety technology, including lane departure warning systems, automatic emergency braking systems and air disc brakes coming standard on equipment. Collision mitigation systems are also standard on Penske Truck Leasing's rental tractors.

Penske Truck Leasing also offers adaptive cruise control that automatically applies the brake or accelerator based on the driver's following distance, side object detection to alert drivers of anything in the truck's blind spot, and electronic stability control to minimize spinouts and rollovers.

Customers can add forward-facing and/or driver-facing camera technology that either records video continuously or when a triggering event occurs. The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) has said cameras are a proactive tool to identify and reduce risky driving behavior, such as speeding, distracted driving or drowsy driving. NTSB also said onboard video systems provide valuable information for evaluating crashes.

Penske Truck Leasing can work with customers to outline the safety technology that best meets their needs.
