Devon Gehman, Technician I
With Penske since 2008
As a technician, I feel like I bring value to the company, and I’m part of a great team who makes sure our trucks are in top shape and safe for our drivers. A well-maintained fleet keeps our customers happy, too.
I enjoy the variety of work I do at Penske. We have the newest fleet and have the highest service and safety standards for all our equipment. The service department is fast-paced and keeps me interested and challenged.
My responsibilities include doing preventive maintenance repairs, diagnosing trucks or going on service calls for our 24/7 Roadside Assistance Service. My top priorities are to produce quality work, ensure customers are satisfied and make sure trucks don’t need service until the next scheduled preventive maintenance.
I began working for Penske part time as a customer service representative during my senior year in high school while attending vo-tech for diesel mechanics. After graduation, I became a Technician III, and the following year I was promoted to a Technician II. Three years later, I enrolled in Penske’s Technician Certification Program (TCP). Six months later, I was promoted to Technician I. My greatest accomplishment has been climbing the technician ladder and becoming a Tech I at a young age.
The TCP gave me a broader understanding of the ins and outs of the Maintenance shop and how to resolve problems you might not encounter every day. Penske really emphasizes on-the-job learning, which I believe gives technicians a professional advantage.
Penske hosts a Tech Challenge every two years. In 2012, I placed second within my district. The challenge provides a great opportunity for you to test your knowledge and skills to see if you can find defects in a preventive maintenance.
Penske is a great place to work for many reasons: great pay, excellent benefits package and supportive, encouraging supervisors. A Maintenance career is perfect for someone who is willing to learn, is hard-working and enjoys hands-on work.
