I'm in my fourth role at Penske, and they've all been very different roles from each other. I started out of the army as a Six Sigma Black Belt quality leader, then got promoted to manager of sales administration. Then I got the opportunity to go to two of our field locations as a district administrator, and in 2007, I got promoted to the role I'm in today at headquarters.
If you're able to demonstrate your ability to learn a variety of skills, I think Penske values that in an associate. And having the opportunity to expand my knowledge is valuable to Penske. For example, I've been able to improve field processes here from a corporate department because of the lessons I learned working in the field.
Getting to do so many different tasks and learn about so many different aspects of the company is what I have enjoyed about my experience with Penske. I never have days where I don't have anything to do. I like the fast pace of work.
The number one thing I love about my job is facing the challenge of what's next. We're always thinking ahead and strategizing about the next event or the next job that we have to do better. We're always trying to improve ourselves.
The opportunities are here if you choose to take them. You don't have to get stuck in a particular silo or a particular path if you don't want to. Sometimes you have to take a step back or sideways to move up, but I think the people who are willing to do that are rewarded for it.
Julie is an avid golfer and enjoys playing on Penske's golf team.
